New Camera – Canon PowerShot G10

I have just bought myself a new point and shoot camera – The Canon G10. I had narrowed my search down to two cameras, the Canon G10 or the Nikon P6000 but as the G10 consistently fared better in reviews I had to bite the bullet and buy a Canon!

I actually bought the camera from Crash Taylor, a wedding photographer who I very much admire and who inspires me a lot, so I hope some of his magic will rub off!

The main reason for buying the Canon G10 is so I can now always have a camera with me. DSLRs are excellent in terms of image quality but you can’t exactly keep one in your coat pocket! So the Canon G10 will be great for that.

As well as this I have found that the more weddings I cover the less I tend to take photographs for pleasure. This has been especially true over the past few months because I have been so busy with weddings. Hopefully having a smaller camera on me will mean that I take more photographs for myself. I am particularly keen to start taking more photographs around Manchester city centre again.

Having said that I do know that some wedding photographers have used a Canon G10 to cover certain parts of the wedding day. The theory being that because the camera is so much smaller than a DSLR it allows them to get amongst the action better without appearing too obtrusive.

I used the camera for the first time today whilst walking in Manchester and have posted a couple of photographs below.

And this is a shot I took with the G10 on my drive back from seeing a client this evening.  Taken somewhere between Altrincham and Knutsford in Cheshire:

john - I use the G10 and I have used it for whole weddings, true there are limitations but I defy anyone to say that you cant have aperfectly acceptable wedding album by using this fine camera.

it is so so sharp and post shoting editing makes it possible to acheive stunning results

Kevin Mullins - I’ve had a G10 for a few months now Neil and it is SUPERB! You are right, it is not a dSLR, nor should it be treated as one, but the results you get from it are brilliant. As Crash says, looks like some of his magic has rubbed off on you as the images (and from the other G10 post) are stunning.

Roger Tyas - Hi Neil

How strange! … I had just viewed the later selection from the G10 and left comments + a link to a review which is well worth a look at, but more oddly is that I’m attending a BIPP evening with Crash Taylor close to the Belfry area on Tuesday which I’m quite looking forward to immensely. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Kind regards, Roger
